Chocolate Salami

Have you heard of chocolate salami? This was a new one for me. A reader mentioned it a while back, so naturally, I needed to try it asap!

A quick google search showed me that variations on the theme are made in Asia, through much of Europe, and in South America as well. It’s known as Lazy Cake in Jordan, Cold Dog in Germany, Biscuit Salami in Hungary, and Italian Straw in Brazil, just to list a few of its many names.

Is it a cake? Is it a cookie? I think it most resembled a no bake cookie in spirit, but it is definitely unique.

What is Chocolate Salami

While it looked a little wild at a couple of points in the cooking process, it truly did end up looking like a log of salami! The powdered sugar coating resembled the chalky looking mold coating that you often find on good, Italian salami.

And the resemblance didn’t end there! When sliced, it actually looked a great deal like its namesake, as well.

But tasting it was a whole different ballgame. It was divine, friends! Heavy cream is heated with chocolate until the chocolate melts and then generous amounts of toasted, chopped nuts, and crumbled cookies are stirred in.

Should you feel so moved, you can also stir in a tablespoon of Frangelico, Amaretto, Kahlua, orange liqueur or whatever liqueur strikes your fancy. The whole mixture is shaped into a log, wrapped tightly in plastic wrap, and refrigerated until it’s firm. Then comes the dusting of the powdered sugar.

I can definitely see myself making this to serve as a quick bite with a London Fog or coffee when friends visit! Have you tried chocolate salami?

To make this luscious dessert, you’ll need the following simple ingredients:

  • Biscoff cookies or vanilla wafers
  • toasted nuts
  • dark chocolate chips
  • heavy cream
  • powdered sugar
  • sweet liqueur, optional

Italian Chocolate Salami is typically made with tea biscuits, but they are nearly impossible for me to find locally. I’ve found that Biscoff cookies or vanilla wafers work just as well, and we enjoy making ours this way with the much more accessible ingredients.

When the chocolate salami is firm, place the powdered sugar on a plate and remove the salami from the plastic wrap. Roll the salami in the powdered sugar and then brush off any excess sugar. Slice into ½-inch thick pieces.

Store in an airtight container. Refrigerate or freeze until ready to serve.
