Ingredients

  • ½ pound Italian sausage or the sausage of your choosing (My kids' favorite is hot breakfast sausage.)
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1-2 teaspoons Italian seasoning Add more if you aren't using Italian sausage.
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes optional
  • 16 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
  • ¼ cup Parmesan cheese finely grated
  • 1 tablespoon fresh basil or Italian parsley thinly sliced or chopped

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400℉. In a large oven safe stainless or cast iron skillet, cook and crumble the sausage over medium high heat. Add the garlic and continue cooking about a minute longer, until fragrant.
  • Add the Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, crushed tomatoes, and tomato paste. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer over low heat for about 3-4 minutes.
  • Remove from the heat. Taste the sauce and add salt and more pepper, if desired. Spoon the ricotta cheese over the top and then generously sprinkle with mozzarella and Parmesan.
  • Transfer the skillet to the oven and bake until the cheese has melted and is bubbling. Remove from the oven and let cool for about 5 minutes before serving with toasted crusty bread slices.
