Rustic Pear Tart

Pear Tart

Desserts that you can eat right from the oven are my favorites; no waiting around for them to cool or rest or frost. My favorite way to enjoy this pear tart is with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

I love using fresh, seasonal ingredients in my recipes. So, when I saw these cheerful, little pears at the grocery store, they were just begging to be turned into a dessert.

Combined with the homemade caramel sauce that was waiting in the fridge, I knew they would be awesome. I couldn’t resist featuring them in this simple pear tart recipe.

To keep the pears the star of this dessert, I kept the other ingredients to a minimum, you’ll only need to add a bit of cinnamon, nutmeg, and a drizzle of caramel.

If you are comfortable making a pie crust, this recipe will be a snap for you. But, if making pie crust challenges you, you can always try this very simple cheater pie crust recipe or go the store-bought route.

However, I promise you can whip out your own lovely pie crusts easily with a little bit of practice. This dessert is best served warm from the oven, and I enjoy it best with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Pear Tart Recipe

You’ll need the following ingredients to make this recipe:

  • pears
  • flour, salt, and sugar
  • cinnamon and nutmeg
  • corn starch
  • shortening
  • water
  • egg
  • caramel sauce (homemade or store-bought)
Caramel Pear Tart

Start by mixing together the flour, salt and sugar in a large bowl. Then, cut in shortening with a pastry blender until pea sized crumbs form.

Sprinkle the cold water over the mixture, lightly stirring with a fork until the dough forms into a ball. But, take care to avoid over mixing or handling the dough. Then, wrap the dough in plastic and chill for at least an hour.

Preheat oven to 400°F. Then, combine the pears, corn starch, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl. Toss gently until the pears are well-coated, then set aside.

Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface until it forms a 12-inch circle. Then, transfer it onto a flat cookie sheet. Arrange the pears on the dough, leaving a 3-inch space around the edge.

Drizzle the caramel sauce over the pears. Then, gently fold the rim of the dough over the pears. Brush the edges of the dough with the beaten egg. Bake for 20-23 minutes or until pears are tender and the crust is golden brown.
