Caramelized Onion Hummus

If you’ve never made hummus from home, then you are absolutely missing out. Hummus is super easy to make. And, it’s cheaper and fresher than what you’ll find on store shelves, too!

But, the best part? The best part of whipping up your own hummus is that you can play with flavors and ingredients. This caramelized onion hummus recipe is exactly the kind of fun twist that I’m talking about.

Slow Cooker Caramelized Onions

The directions for caramelizing the onions for this hummus recipe are included below in the recipe card. However, I have a very handy tip for you, if you enjoy them as much as we do. You can make caramelized onions in the crock-pot!

I like to prep a big batch all at once and then portion the cooked onions into bags for the freezer. The last time I made this hummus, I just grabbed a bag from the freezer, thawed it for half an hour on the counter, and then added the onions to the food processor with the other ingredients.

Caramelized Onion Hummus Recipe

You’ll need the following ingredients to make this recipe:

  • butter
  • onion 

Hummus Ingredients

  • canned chickpeas or garbanzo beans
  • caramelized onions
  • tahini
  • olive oil
  • garlic
  • salt and pepper

Caramelized Onion Instructions

To begin making the caramelized onions, melt the butter over high heat, then add the diced or sliced onion. Cook for 20 minutes or until the onions are caramel brown in color. Then, let them cool.

Alternatively, you can follow these instructions for a large batch of caramelized onions made in the crockpot. Freeze them in ½ cup portions and use as desired.

Once your onions have cooled, you can add them, the chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, and garlic to a food processor. Then, process until smooth. Taste the hummus and add salt and pepper, as desired.

Serve with raw vegetables, pita chips, crackers, or use as a spread on sandwiches and wraps. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large onion diced or cut into thin strips

Hummus Ingredients

  • 15 ounces canned chickpeas or garbanzo beans drained
  • ½ cup caramelized onions see above
  • 3 tablespoons tahini
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt adjust to taste
  • teaspoon freshly ground pepper adjust to taste

  • In the bowl of a food processor, combine chickpeas, caramelized onions, tahini, olive oil, and garlic. Process until smooth. Taste the hummus and add salt and pepper, as desired.
